To all the oldtimers from Panama II et. al. Those of you who may remember David Witt from Panama II, he is losing his battle against Cancer. Anyone caring to send your regards or whatever please feel free to e-mail me and I will pass along your thoughts After his service in Panama he spent a tour in Viet Nam and then continued his Civil Service career in the Dept. of Ag., retiring five years ago to care for his ailing father. He was diagnosed in February and so that's the way it is. I'll be seeing hi in September. Que vaina!

The National Peace Corps Association is selling $50 subscriptions to Hotline (the RPCV publication for job seekers) yet it is available online for FREE on the Peace Corps web site (http://www.peacecorps.gov/rpcv/careertrack/hl/download.html) for anyone wh has Acrobat Reader. Don't let what happened to me happen to you . They refused to refund my $50 despite the fact that the only reason I subscribed was because the Peace Corps web site clearly stated that Hotline was not available online because then anyo e could have access to it and it was being advertised as a publication to mainly serve RPCVs.

How did you locate this PCPF website?: from PC packet

Comments:
Hi everybody, I'm Tony Starks, new to the web, new to computers, and going to the PC in Panama (Ihope) in Sept of 00. My website is suerwkr PCPF@aol.com (No I am not a plumber) and I have made this my dream, to set aside my worldly goods and strike out to he p others and have a groovy time. I would like to hear from others who are going to Panama in Sept. If all goes well, I am going to Miami Fla on Sept ll 2000, then to Panama the next day. In country training is Sept thru Dec. Web me (or whatever they c ll it--I just got on to this whole thing about two weeks ago) and let me know your feelings about: a. "older" (56) PCVs (I'm picking up the lingo!) who are selling thsir homes, closing their businesses (Law practice in San Diego CA for 20 years) saying goodby to former wives, children, professional collegues (I never could spell that) and all that s familiar. No blockbuster, CNN, NYTimes, Cinema 24, whatever. Can I make it without a support group? b. How bad is the weather anyway? I've been in Washington DC in August, New England in the late summer, and Baja CA, Mex in all seasons, but can I hack 90 plus (please don't tell me it's not the heat it's the humidity) weather consistently. I'm ass ming my volunteer service does not include air conditioning. Do I just sweat it out with my Graham Greene novels and G&Ts or do I get acclimated after a while? This is a serious question. c. I hate roaches. How big are they? Somebody said "see Texas." What does that mean? I mean like when I wake up are my socks moving across the floor or what? d. I read in my PC stuff that the reason many older volunteers don't make it (I guess this means after the 3 months training period they tell you to ride into the sunset and keep riding) is that they can't make the language. How much do they expect rom us after the training, to be conversant, literate, inarticulate, or deme otra cerveza, wha? e. I guess that's all, my attention span has ended. Get back to me so that I know there is someone out there.

I represent the Mohonk Children's Services and I am going to Panama Between 2/17 - 2/29. I would like to know where there are one or more children's programs, especially for orphans or homeless children and adolescents where we can bring some donations and/or needed supples( sports equipment, clothes, toys etc.). I would also like to know where I can rent a 4x4 less expensively. Lastly, does anyonme know if we can drive part way up Volcan Baru so that we can limit the ike to 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 hours round trip to the summit(age range of our kids are 6-13). Thanks David A. The Crisis Corps is desperately in need of Spanish speaking RPCVs to assist in the reconstruction from hurricaines Georges and Mitch. These 3 to 6 month assignments are for RPCVs only and require good Spanish language skills. Volunteers are provided wit travel to and from post, a living allowance, health care and a readjustment allowance-- very much like Peace Corps service, only shorter term. People with backgrounds in health, agriculture, water sanitation, social work and community organizing are all needed! For more info, call 1-800-424-8580 ext. 2250, visit the Crisis Corps pages on the Peace Corps web site, or e-mail to CrisiscorpsPCPF@peacecorps.gov.

In the small world department, my younger daugheter is the Peace Corps type. She has completed most of the tramites and is tentatively aiming for Central Asia -- although a two year stint in Panama would be welcome as well. She just returned from a week long conference on Violence against Women held in Nicaragua. There she met Panama 8 RPCV Kathy Whittaker - doing well and living in California. Have I mentioned in other places that Panama 9 RPCV John Rossetti called my house about 30 years ago asking if I wanted to go out for a cervecita o dos. Turns out, that was the night of our engagement party. John came to the party, met my sister-in-law nd married her 6 months later. Happily ever after.
