After a year in Italy I took a job in the film industry and came home to Los Angeles -- but only after meeting my husband to be in 1985. Oleg was a famous Russian film star who defected to the home of my friends, where I happened to be staying.
I've been slowly working my way up the ladder in the film industry while Oleg has been re-establishing his career. I now head the film company of Just Betzer, the Dane who won an Oscar several years ago for Babette's Feast. We just completed a family film called Newman, and just began a film of the Danish rescue of the jewish population during World War II. We have several other films in various states of pre-production and development. We have big hopes for Oleg who made his American debut in Red Heat as Arnold Schwarzenegger's partner.

Hannan, Jim Group 8 from 1965 to 1967 in San Blas.
Biography: Jim reported in his Group 8 1990 Annual Letter that he and his wife Shery revisited San Blas last year. He wrote: "Looking out over the warm emerald green sea of Tupile, I reviewed what I had done, and wanted to do, as a PCV 25 years ago. I recalled our adrenalin-filled group meetings in San Blas when we would hotly debate the pros, cons, and feasibility of our projects. One view was, 'These people live in paradise. What are we going to do to improve that?' The implication being that we could (and should) do nothing. Another view (mine) was, 'Change is going to come, let's be part of influencing the direction of it.' (Kind of a, let's play God approach, or so it was described to me.)"
Jim goes on to describe their visit to Panamá: "All the People we ran into were happy for the USA intervention, but then they were all tied to tourism which depended on getting Noriega out. ... Then we flew to San Blas where the Cuna are also happy for the intervention. We arrived for Tupile's festival and I spent days touring from house to house, repeating the same stories and getting the same wonderfully alive laughs and warmth."
He continues, "So, back to contemplating PCV projects: 25 years ago I introduced to their tropical paradise: the chainsaw, insecticides, inorganic fertilizers, fish nets (with which they immediately wiped out the caimans and crocodiles), and burros (to carry loads out of the mountains thus allowing them to deforest the steeper inland terrain - yikes). Now the only project I should have pushed was birth control which, as some may recall, failed when the elders accused me of wanting to shack up with their wives. I wonder what I will think of it all in another 25 years?? The only thing that is clear is that I am glad I went there and have kept in contact."

In 1976, I joined the Massachusetts Public Defender's Office as a trial lawyer and remained there for 13 years. In April, 1984, my then 6-month old daughter came home from Korea. Meredith, now 7, was described by her teacher as "a spectacular child". She is that, and a joy as well. In 1988 my first husband and I were divorced and I married Richard Cohen, a judge of the New Jersey Appeals Court. This necessitated a move to New Jersey. I now do civil litigation part-time, and represent true scoundrels. I pray daily that the "good works gods" will credit what I do now against my 20 years in the public sector.

Peace Corps was definitely a turning point. One might say that nothing has ever quite been the same since...but I say that about having a child, too. I know the PC experience is a maturing one, not only for the individual, but for our country as a whole. I'm relieved that we once again have PCVs in Panamá...offering hope that the siege is over.

Biography: Immediately following my Peace Corps tour, I located in Knoxville, TN and was employed as a social worker in a state mental hospital. During the following years I birthed a son (1971), presently a sophomore Fish and Wildlife major at O.S.U.; divorced (1974); graduated from Law School at U.C. Davis; was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (1976); learned how to loom weave; volunteered as a refugee relocation caseworker with the Red Cross and an ESL teacher with the public schools; was a legal representative with Legal Aid; did disability rights work with Portland Bureau of Buildings and the State Legislature. I've served on many Boards, Task Forces, Committees, etc., most recently as a Commissioner with the Metropolitan Human Relations Commission. Finally, I've full circled to return to social work, having opened a private practice specializing in the treatment of people adjusting to chronic illness/disability, abuse, multiple personality disorders and addictions. In the spiritual world, I have reconnected with my Jewish roots and went to the extreme role of serving as the President of my building-less congregation. Next to Peace Corps days, this was the most challenging position to find myself in for a year of tough leadership. I am guided by the wisdom of Auntie Mame: "...life is a banquet and most poor fools are starving to death."
